The part everyone skips

How to get your first customer.

Here's the secret nobody wants to hear: your first customer is not hiding behind a logo, a website, or an Instagram account. You don't find them with ads. You find them with a question — asked to a person, by name. Everything else is a way of avoiding the question.

Step 1 — One sentence

What you do, for who, at what price. "Custom brackets for bike lights, for my dad's cycling group, $15." If you can't say it in one breath, nobody can repeat it to a friend — and repeatable is what sells.

Step 2 — Name ten people before you ask anyone

Two for practice — people who'll be kind while you get the words out. Five who might actually want it. Three you don't know yet. Write all ten down first, so you can't quietly swap in only the easy ones. This one rule is the difference between a real test and talking to your mom.

Step 3 — Ask all ten, and log the exact words

Not "she seemed interested." Her actual words. Money, a booked time, or a real introduction counts as a yes. Everything else is a no — and each kind of no teaches you something different: wrong person, wrong price, wrong time, or wrong offer.

Step 4 — Read the pattern, not your feelings

After ten answers, one thing will be louder than the rest. Four people said the price was wrong? That's your fix. Three said "not now"? Timing, not the idea. The pattern tells you what to change — you only change one thing, then ask ten more.

Most people quit at three asks. If you finish all ten you're in rare company even if everyone said no — you'll know something about your idea that no amount of thinking could tell you. And if one says yes? That's your first customer. It usually takes less than three days.
